Pentecost Sunday, May 11, 2008

BACK HOME

Dear Parish Family,

The Reading from the Acts of the Apostles for Pentecost reminds us that “they were all gathered together in one place”, and here you are. As we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Church by our worship and fellowship, please remember in your prayers those who are unable to be with us today; perhaps you will even go to visit them and reassure them of our unity in Christ Jesus.

Recently I have been receiving a lot of inquiries about funeral arrangements, especially concerning cremation or burial. I am preparing a more detailed letter on this topic, as well as some information on living wills I hope will be helpful. However, it seems prudent to me to mention a few things sooner rather than later. A funeral mass in the Church has always been considered of great importance. It is far more than just gathering together to remember, it is the greatest and most powerful prayer in the Church for the person who has died. The surest way Jesus has given us to be united with Him is by entering into the sacraments which are both celebrated and recalled during the funeral mass. It is my desire that the celebration of the funeral mass here at Our Lady of the Lake is so beautiful and meaningful, that none of us could imagine not wanting one. Another question regards cremation. Cremation, although permissible in circumstances of difficulty, has never been as equally desirable as bodily burial. Bodily burial has always been an important Christian value which communicates the dignity of the human body, even in death. I understand that cost is a very real limiter to funeral planning. We have been looking into available options which are both Catholic and affordable so that no one needs to be deprived of a meaningful Christian burial. Very soon, I hope to have both more information and more explanation of the importance and affordability of a Catholic funeral.

Love in Christ Jesus,

The envelopes will be available in the pews. Half of the collection will remain in our (arch) diocese to fund local Catholic communication efforts. New Book Release & Signing

By Rev. Dr. Fidelis Igwenwanne

Our beloved Fr. Fidelis has released another book titled: “The Concept of God in Igbo Traditional Religion: Continuity and Differences in Relation to the Christian God”. This new book is an extract from his doctorate thesis. His earlier book titled “A Priest who is He Amongst You“will also be available for purchase and signing. The price is $9.00.

Father will be available to sign his books on:

Sunday, May 11th (Pentecost Sunday)

Time:  after all Masses

Place: Narthex of our Church

Suggested Price: $20.00

The number of copies is limited, so the book will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

This 111 page book examines the concept of God in Igbo traditional religion: continuity and discontinuity in relation to the Christian God.  The main synthesis of this book is that the Igbo concept of God serves as “preparation for the Gospel”. In other words, that the grace of God has prepared the forbears of the Igbo  people of Nigeria  through their religious tradition and culture for the reception of the  Christian message through the proclamation of the Gospel.

The contribution of this work is found on its passage from elements of cultural anthropology to the theological consideration of Igbo concept of God in the context of inculturation.

This well researched book is divided into three chapters and it ends with elaborate interviews with some Igbo authors and professors from the higher ecclesiastical Institutes and Universities in Nigeria. The author, Fr. Fidelis made a trip to Nigeria where he had personal discussions with them on selected themes of this research work. This intriguing book is highly recommended to all, especially those who have a penchant for discovering how Christianity influences and interacts with other cultural religions.

Sick and Homebound

If you have a family member or friend who is homebound or in the hospital, please call the parish office to be sure we know to visit them.  We do not want anyone to be neglected or ignored.

Deacon Bob and his wife Ramona visit the hospital twice a week.  Deacon Tom visits the nursing homes weekly.  Our priests and deacons all visit the hospital, nursing homes and homebound frequently.  Also, many dedicated extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion visit the sick each week.  Nevertheless, some people are still missed.  Please help us to know who needs a visit.

Thank You,

Father Chauncey

Internet Safety for Kids

The Internet has become the new schoolyard for child molesters seeking girls or boys to victimize. Internet “chat rooms” provide a teenager with an opportunity to engage in a “live” conversation with friends from school or church, or with other teenagers from around the world. A chat room is similar to an old-style telephone party line, except that the teens are typing. Law enforcement has found that child molesters use chat rooms to gain easy and safe access to teens. Because of the seemingly caring and seductive talent of child molesters, teenagers should be warned that when they are in a chat room, they should never provide anyone with private information, personal information, and especially their specific physical location.
